|The metal repinique
(known in northern Brazil as the repique) is the lead drum of the Rio and São
Paulo samba baterias. The calls of the repinique start and stop the bateria
and signal the breaks and the paradinhas (tamborim section solos). The
repinique is played with hands (repique de mão in original Pagode
style), wooden sticks (Axé de Bahia), or flexible plastic rods (samba reggae).
Maninho Z10 played the repinique solos on the classic album Brasileiro
by brazilian jazz and bossa nova pioneer Sérgio Mendez. In this jam with
Monobloco he plays it in the classic Rio de Janeiro escola de samba style
with one hand and one wooden stick.
