Started by Jeffrey Smith and
Peter Lord at the close of the 1980s as The Stand (named after a book by Stephen
King), this band from Brooklyn, New York really began kicking ass when singer
Sandra St. Victor joined the group at the dawn of the '90s and the band renamed
itself to The Family Stand. This is the kind of band that sounds way better on
a piece of black, crackling vinyl than on the cold silver digital wasteland of
a cd. Musical style: 1990s hiphop injected into classic '70s soul, funky soul
spiked with rap, Curtis Mayfield and Lyn Collins meet Prince and Spearhead. Irresistible.
