ANDROID APPS

android underground app collection Old versions and other goodies.

back up your old apps, because newer is not always better

Before you download apps from blogs and forums, search Google first to check if the apps are legit and make sure to use a virus scanner. Blogs and forums are often a mixed bag of legit apps and warez, so make sure you know what you're doing.

some free apps on my phone
AdAway Excellent ad blocker that beats AdFree.
Addons Detector Tells you which apps come with Airpush and other obnoxious types of advertising.
AirDroid Makes my computer and my phone talk to each other.
AFWall+ Excellent firewall that doesn't leak like DroidWall does.
Any Cut Make shortcuts to things that don't show up in your app drawer.
avast! To find lost phones. All for free, with a firewall and call filter thrown in as well. And of course it comes with a virus scanner.
Aviary Free Android image editor that doesn't destroy your exif tags.
Bomb That Task Because sometimes task killers make sense.
Book Catalogue Sync my books with Goodreads.
BugMeNot Bypass website registration and login.
Business Calendar Free The only free calendar app with custom reminder times.
ClockSync Sync your Android system clock with a time server. Useful if the time from your mobile network is off.
CSipSimple VoIP with great sound. Integrates with the stock dialer.
Dolphin Browser Most versatile web browser for Android, but you need root access to tame it.
Dood's Music Streamer Streams music from Grooveshark for free and builds radio stations from your play queue. No need to sign up!
ES File Explorer File manager, bluetooth program, ftp client, Dropbox app, zips and unzips, unpacks rar files, ...
Euro Dictionary The dictionaries are not that good, but it supports text to speech.
Flash Plenty of websites won't work without Flash, so get a copy to surf all those sites that still use it.
Foxit Mobile PDF reader with text reflow.
Friendcaster Alternative Facebook app, because the official Facebook app sucks.
Google Maps Online and offline maps, route calculation only works online. Google Maps is still way behind Nokia Maps.
imo Multi-network instant messaging app without bloatware or unnecessary background services. Supports multiple accounts per network.
Jota Text Editor Doesn't choke on large files, and gets special characters (like ä & ç) right.
K-9 Mail Beats the stock email client hands down.
Liquid Bear The closest thing to last.fm radio for Android.
Métro Offline public transport route planner with hundreds of cities all over the planet.
Opera Mini Best mobile web browser on slow and expensive data connections.
OsmAnd Free offline navigation powered by OpenStreetMap. Offline route calculations and offline maps!
Papyrus Ex Bare bones notes app that saves notes as text files so you can back 'em up and load 'em in other apps. Tip: tell Papyrus to store your notes in your Dropbox folder.
QuickDic Minimalist interface and some pretty good dictionaries (also some really bad ones).
seNotes Fill your screen with post-it notes. Crams more text in a note than any other sticky note app.
Shazam Find out what song is playing. Try SoundHound and TrackID too.
Skype But not the latest version because it makes too much noise.
SopCast Watch your favourite football team play live for free without geographic restrictions.
SoundHound Find out what song is playing, even with lots of background noise. Try Shazam and TrackID too.
TrackID Find out what song is playing. Try SoundHound and Shazam too.
Viber VoIP app that needs a few extra apps to keep its autostart behaviour under control, but it sounds better than Skype.
VideoMix Stream and download movies and tv shows.
Widgetsoid Very versatile widget builder to toggle data, flashlight, and many other settings. Steep learning curve, but it's worth the trouble.
WiFi Probe Find the real free WiFi, without logins or pay screens.
Wifi Protector Protect yourself against rogue access points like WiFiKill.

some free apps that I keep offline with AFWall+ and LBE Privacy Guard
Calendar Snooze Keeps the calendar alarm ringing instead of switching itself off too soon.
Default App Manager Beats the scenic route through the Android app settings menu.
GO Launcher EX Best balance between speed, eye candy, and function, but only if you use an old version.
LBE Privacy Guard Tame apps that ask for too many permissions. I tame LBE with DroidWall.
Make Your Clock Widget Made a 1x1 time and date widget that launches my custom alarm clock app.
MyBackup Root Backup and restore your contacts, SMSs, MMSs, calendars, apps, settings, etc. Online backup and other extras only work in Pro version.
Timers4Me Free countdown timer that can run and store multiple timers. Has a stopwatch and alarm clock too.
Titanium Backup root Backup and restore your apps and their settings. Online backup and other extras only work in Pro version.
Wi-Fi Ruler There are plenty of apps to help your phone connect to bad networks. This one tells your phone when not to connect.

some apps that I threw away (which doesn't necessarily mean they're bad)
AdFree Because AdAway is better.
Adobe Reader Used to be the only free PDF reader with text reflow that works, but now there's Foxit Mobile.
AlarmSolo Android's built-in alarm clock was too unreliable on my old ROM, but since I switched to CyanogenMod the built-in alarm does the job.
AVG Antivirus Slow as a government agency. Avast doesn't make my phone run like quicksand.
CoboltFM It was a great app, but last.fm killed it. Liquid Bear took over.
DictionaryForMIDs Ditched when Google Translate learned to translate offline.
DroidWall Because AFWall+ doesn't leak like DroidWall does.
Easy Photo Editor Beaten by Aviary.
File Expert Asks money for root access, which ES File Explorer and X-plore do for free.
fring Used to be a multi-network chat and VoIP app, now only chats on its own proprietory network.
GO SMS Pro Ditched it because CyanogenMod has a much better SMS app.
KlastFM It was a great app, but last.fm killed it. Liquid Bear took over.
Lookout Replaced by avast.
NetQin Antivirus Failed to find the test viruses I planted on my phone. Replaced by avast.
Nimbuzz Used to be a great VoIP and instant messaging app until it got dumbed down way too much. Replaced by CSipSimple and imo.
Optimize Toolbox A Swiss army knife of system utilities. I used it because of its autostart manager but then I found Gemini App Manager.
QueueTube Use YouTube as a radio. Great app, but Dood's Music Streamer taps into Grooveshark and works better.
Root Explorer This paid app used to be the only root file manager that worked, but now apps like ES File Explorer and X-plore do it for free.
SetVsel Overclock and undervolt your Motorola Defy, Droid X, or Milestone. Don't need it anymore since CyanogenMod has it built-in.
TinyShark Streams music from Grooveshark for free. No need to sign up. But Dood's Music Streamer is better.
